Broken Obelisk

Broken Obelisk excerpt (2013) – Preston Duncan, sax and Ann DuHamel, piano

completed 21 October, 2013; world-premiere 6 December 2013 in Mexico City, Mexico.

Broken Obelisk (2013) was commissioned through a faculty research enhancement grant through the University of Minnesota, Morris. The work is inspired by Barnett Newman’s sculpture of the same name, located in front of Rothko Chapel in Houston, TX. The work makes use of linear melodic segments separated by large intervals, meant to make musical alliteration to the “broken” aspect of the sculpture.
